| The most expensive car licence plates sold in Hong Kong since 1973 - the definitive and most accurate list available |

Read on, car licence or car vanity plates in Hong Kong is a passion of mine and has been since 2011 and one of the most interesting projects I have ever done is compiling a list of the most expensive licence plates sold in Hong Kong since 1973.

The criteria for joining the list is the licence plate had to have sold for HK$1 Million + or US$128,205 +

JL - Car Licence | Vanity Plate sold for HK$1,100,000 or US$141,025 - it is number 86 of the 109 cars with a HK$1 Million + | US$128,205 + Licence Plates in Hong Kong and it just so happens these are my initials and no, I do not own a car!

All information regarding auction prices of licence plates | vanity plates were requestitioned from the Transport Department of the Hong Kong Government who hold monthly auctions. Please assume that this comprehensive information is 100% accurate

Auctions are generally held weekly and naturally all my records are completely up to date

As of April 9th 2024,4,007 licence plates have sold for over HK$100,000 or US$12,820 but only 109 licence plates have sold for HK$1 Million + or US$128,205 +

Traditional Licence Plates have been sold at auction in Hong Kong with lucky number and letter combinations since 1973

Personalised Licence Plates or Vanity Plates have been sold at auction in Hong Kong since 2006 | I have been able to obtain 30 years of Auction data (over 5,400 pages | 145,000+ entries) | covering the time period 1990 - 2024 | apparently there is no computerised data available to the public prior to 1990

My contact in the Transport Department was very helpful and he checked the paper records from 1973 - 1990 for details of all licence plates that sold for HK$100,00 + or US$12,820 and sent them to me

It is understood that the Licence Plate No. 8 is the holy grail in Hong Kong... it sold in 1988 for a comparatively low price of HK$5,000,000 or US$641,025 of it ever came on to the market again it would sell for between US$5 - 10 Million
