“Travelling as a senior can be an enriching and rewarding experience, but it’s essential to plan carefully to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. One of the best ways for senior travellers to explore new destinations safely and comfortably is by booking private tours. Here are 5 reasons why Private tours are important for senior travellers:
Expert Guidance: Private tours are led by experienced and knowledgeable guides who can provide valuable insights into the history, culture, and attractions of the destination. They can also offer assistance and support, ensuring that senior travellers have a stress-free experience.
Safety and Security: Guided tours provide an added layer of safety and security for senior travellers. Guides are trained to handle emergencies and can provide assistance in case of illness, injury, or other unexpected situations. They can also help navigate unfamiliar surroundings and ensure that senior travellers stay safe at all times.
Comfort and Convenience: Guided tours take care of all the logistics of travel, including transportation and meals (if this is what you want) and such. This means that senior travellers can relax and enjoy their trip without having to worry about the details. Private tours also often include where possible advice on how to skip-the-line access to attractions, saving senior travellers time and energy.
Social Interaction: For Cruise Ship passengers specifically travelling with a Private tour group provides senior travellers with the opportunity to socialize and make new friends. This can be especially important for seniors who are travelling alone or who may be feeling isolated. Private tours offer a supportive and inclusive environment where senior travellers can connect with others and share their travel experiences. I have done many Private Tours with Seniors where 2 or 3 couples meet on a cruise and book one of my tours, this allows them to share the cost of the tour.
Overall, booking a Private tour is an important consideration for senior travellers looking to explore new destinations safely, comfortably and with peace of mind. With expert guidance, safety and security, comfort and convenience, and social interaction, Private tours offer senior travellers a stress-free and enjoyable travel experience.”

One of my favourite images that I have taken, the greatest panoramic city view in the world from the Lugard Road Lookout (or Jamie’s spot as I have been there 6,000+ times) at Victoria Peak in Hong Kong
How can you NOT come to Hong Kong and miss out on the best panoramic city view in the world, this one spot makes it all worthwhile! Please note that a lot of tour companies in Hong Kong will NOT take you to this place which is called the Lugard Road Lookout, they will take you to the Peak Tower Sky Terrace 428 Viewing Platform, The Peak Galleria Roof or the Lions Pavilion Lookout which do NOT have a 180 degree panoramic city view and in fact only show about half the view.

Private Tours for Seniors in Hong Kong
A word about older people or seniors
I love you guys! and yes, I can relate as I am of that age and I am not one to rush around trying to cram in as much as possible whilst we explore, I believe in quality rather than quantity and yes, we have adult conversations!
One of the most interesting things I am learning as I enter the 60’s age wise is how younger people treat you, I often think that young people think I am senile but I have had that problem since my early 20’s when my hair turned silver! fortunately our 3 sons still for the most part treat my like an adult with all his faculties intact and do listen every now and then to advice.
I know from being in the Private Tour business since 2010 that a lot of young guides in their 20’s and 30’s are not comfortable with older guests as they remind them of their parents or grand parents! and yes, a lot of young people think that older folk are a few bricks short of a full load.
No such issues with me I love interacting with my guests of a similar age or older.
So here are a few facts about Jamie and his Private Tours and Experiences for senior (or older) travellers
I have done 1,450 + tours (out of 2,331) and experiences between 2011 - 2025 (with no tours from January 2020 - March 2023 due to Covid) with guests aged between 50 and 90 years of age and yes Hong Kong was closed to tourism for literally 3 years due to Covid and I had to take on Consultancy work to pay the bills.
or another way of looking at it, 63% + of my guests were aged between 50 and 90 years old
I don’t really like to label people, in fact there is now quite a discussion going on as to what age parameters fit the term Senior, in the past in Hong Kong 65 was the benchmark age as to be called old or elderly but recent Government policies in Hong Kong suggest that they consider anyone aged above 60 to be a senior! so I qualify! odd isn’t it, in a lot of countries the trend is to set a higher age, ie 68 or 70!
Based on my own research many Travel and Tourism online magazines often refer to anyone over 50 to be seniors!
by far the most popular tours Seniors book with me are either 6 hours or 8 hours
“Older travellers are drawn to destinations that offer a mix of culture, nature, and convenience”
Hong Kong has those attributes in spades and then some.
In Hong Kong many Tour Operators when they think of senior travellers picture cruise ship passengers, enjoying a cruise at sea while travelling the world and Hong Kong gets lots of cruise ships calling every year, this is just a stereotype these days and not accurate all. I am all for older guests who are young at heart! but are happy to do a tour | experience at a leisurely pace.
Ever since I started doing private tours of Hong Kong in 2011 I have often wondered why older people book me and the answer did not surprise me, I am of a similar age and have a lifetime of knowledge and I just get it.
Hong Kong is a very large city, 430sqm or 1,114 sq km and has a population of roughly 7.54 million people. Hong Kong is also a very safe city and the citizens are very friendly but Hong Kong is not perfect, with me you get my views on life in Hong Kong and what makes Hong Kong tick and after 53 years living here I have a handle on that!
In other words we have adult conversations.
I have travelled myself extensively to many cities around the world and for me anyway Hong Kong is quite unique with such an interesting history, I have lived in Hong for 25 years under British Rule and 28 years under Chinese Rule, I am married to a local lady and we have 3 sons aged 25, 32 and 41, her native language is Cantonese and then English and works in an International School., we live in a town out in the sticks so to speak, a middle class apartment block and in our town, there are virtually NO foreigners living there which I always find quite odd given our amazing transport options and cheapish rents….
Quite often over the years I have actually brought many older guests to my home town in Hong Kong as it is a fascinating insight into Hong Kong Culture and I give them an insight they will not get anywhere else.
Unlike a lot of tour companies in Hong Kong, I welcome older travellers to experience my Private Tours and Experiences I have a lot of experience doing them and I have to say I thoroughly enjoy doing them, you would be amazed at how much can be seen in half a day so to speak.
When you are researching doing a tour in Hong Kong many people will choose a group tour and think this is the only real option they have, it isn’t!
I know that typically an older traveller is more likely to do a group tour when in Hong Kong, quite often and as mentioned above they team up with friends they have met on a cruise ship as this gives them a chance to meet new people and make new friends and I do not dispute that., although I think this is a great option if you want do a group food tour or you simply want to sit on a coach for 6 hours with 20 other people which is more about eating and cramming stuff in than seeing the sights and learning about Hong Kong Culture, but from my perspective something gets lost if you are part of a large group of 10 + people and yes, there are plenty of options in Hong Kong if you want to do free tours or very low cost tours, I have done these tours in the interests of research
My tours are not cheap as you will note from the prices I charge and honestly, you get what you pay for (sorry for the cliche)
I am all about quality and giving you the best possible experience, I have lived in Hong Kong for 53 years and have completed so far 2,331+ Private Tours of Hong Kong and I guess I am also popular because I am English and we should not have any communication issues! I also have a very English sense of humour! I should also point out that I do not speak Cantonese but this has NEVER been a problem for me living in Hong Kong and my wife is just a phone call away, anyway!
This is a private tour and I do not work to a fixed itinerary, I am a veteran of 2,331 private tours and flexibility is my middle name, I can accommodate special requests (subject to time constraints) or you can leave it in my capable hands.
An accurate description of my private tours and experiences are a hybrid walking tour, it is NOT all walking, I make extensive use of Public Transport which is Hong Kong Culture 101 and makes getting from A to B to C a breeze, please note I do NOT do car tours.
…. and yes on the subject of car tours, they are very popular with older people, particularly for those who might have mobility issues and I understand that, but I believe you are missing out on what makes Hong Kong tick, to understand Hong Kong you need to get around on our amazingly affordable and reliable public transport, I have plenty of friends who do quality car tours and am more than happy to give referrals if you want to do a car tour.
I also understand that older travellers also like to document their travels on social media like everyone else, I take that into account and please be aware that I have written a couple of blog posts about the horrible travel cliches, hidden gems, secret spots, travel like a local! please be aware that for example on Instagram people do not upload raw images, they tend to be heavily filtered with a dream like quality, in real life the subject of the image is quite different and trust me after 10+ years of Instagram there is no such thing as a hidden gem any more in Hong Kong, a million people have been there done that and took the picture! in my experience many of my older guests actually lug around proper camera equipment and trust me Hong Kong is very photogenic.
Please note I do know a little about photography, I have over 174,000+ images on my Flickr site, I am not in any shape or form a professional photographer but have a very nice camera and a lot of my guests use my image site for a spot of research on places they might like to visit..

My insider tip
Please note that in general if you book a tour on Viator or Tripadvisor you generally have NO control over what guide will lead your Private Tour of Hong Kong and this is the most important component of the tour. I urge you to check the actual company website and book via their website and do not forget to read Tripadvisor reviews as well.
Just a small sampling of the thousands of seniors that I have taken on a Private Tour of Hong Kong, let me, Jamie give you some fabulous memories to take home with you.
