The Electric Car Market (EV‛S) in Hong Kong 2025
36 Of My Favourite Electric Car images in Hong Kong
The very first Telsa I photographed in Hong Kong in Mid 2013
The very first Telsa Model S I photographed in Hong Kong in June 2014
I am a leading expert in Hong Kong on the Car Vanity Plate Culture also known as Personalised Car Licence Plate Culture which garners worldwide attention particularly at Chinese New Year in Hong Kong and I have also taken over 104,000 + images of cars in Hong Kong, it is a thing!
I want to get this out there straight off, I am NOT a fan of Electric Cars (EV’s in Hong Kong) never have been and I doubt I ever will be.
You do have to give credit to Elon Musk for introducing Tesla to Hong Kong in 2013, sales were driven by the Model S which was released here in 2014 and for many years Tesla had almost no competition which is why they own almost 50% of the EV market share currently, for some reason or another the Tesla Model S and X are not available in Hong Kong (that decision to discontinue them was made a few years ago) so we have the Model 3 and Model Y and I have seen a cyber truck in one Tesla showroom but not on the streets yet. The only saving grace for Tesla in my eyes is that a lot of Hong Konger’s pimp out there Tesla with wraps, wings and body kits, makes them look a lot meaner!
2021 was the beginning of the end for petrol cars and hybrids when this statement was issued.
“Hong Kong in 2021 rolled out its Roadmap on the Popularisation of Electric Vehicles, which pledged to end the registration for new petrol and hybrid private cars by 2035.” and yes, this is official Hong Kong Government policy.
I am not a dinosaur but I am of an age where I was brought up on proper petrol engined cars and there is nothing sweeter than the sound of petrol engine V8, V10 or V12 as it roars by with the burbling, crackling engine turning heads contrast that with the sound of tyres on the road as an electric car swishes by.
As far as I am concerned electric cars have no soul, no heritage and no wow factor and yes it is entirely possible that will change over the next 10 years but for now I am just so sad that electric cars are swamping the roads of Hong Kong, there has been a fundamental shift in the car culture in Hong Kong, 2024 seems to have been the catalyst with new car sales being dominated b electric cars and people are actually trading in super cars and high end models for very bland EV’s, I am perfectly aware that EV’s are quite fast acceleration wise up to 60mph and that is absolutely a selling factor here in Hong Kong but give me a Porsche 911 Turbo S any day of the week!
So far the Hong Kong Government has approved almost 400 EV Models and currently as of the end of January 2025 there are slightly more than 110,000 EV’s in Hong Kong which is about 12.3% of all current cars in Hong Kong and you guessed it, Tesla accounts for nearly half of that total, what is also interesting is that EV sales from Chinese Manufacturers are running at about 35% of all new car sales and I expect Tesla will lose market share.
I expect Toyota will enter the fray big time very soon, they are slow of the mark in bringing in electric cars but they are by far the biggest car seller in Hong Kong and it is just a matter of time.
Porsche Taycan in Hong Kong
The Porsche Taycan is a very popular EV in Hong Kong, a proper car it is from my way of thinking!
Personally the only EV that I like at the moment is the Porsche Taycan but that is more to do with the heritage and history of Porsche, the styling is love it or hate it but it has a presence, it looks like a proper car and has substance to it, a friend of mine just purchased a Mercedes electric SUV the EQB 250 and that feels like a proper car and you can tell when sitting in it that it is a Mercedes, I was quite impressed.. some of the styling on the larger Mercedes models to me are a bit iffy but I am guessing that will change.
You will notice BMW and Mercedes Benz have very strong sales, that is because Hong Konger’s like European brands, they are still a status symbol and have that quality about them.
When it comes to the Chinese made EV’s well, I completely understand why Hong Konger’s are buying them, they are cheaper than comparable Japanese and Korean models and the styling is quite funky and they look like a real quality car, Hong Kong has become the go to testing ground for new EV models from China. The models from Zeekr are quite interesting styling wise and yes, they are a direct competitor to the hybrid Toyota Alphard which is substantially more expensive and a lot of older model Alphards are being traded in.
I should point out that a major driving force behind the massive sales increase in Hong Kong for EV’s is the Government Subsidy outlined in the image above, I doubt very much sales would be anywhere near so high if there was no “cash rebate” by the Government. I understand that another factor for the sales increase is that it is a lot cheaper to charge a car rather than fill it with petrol!
It will be interesting to see how EV sales progress in the next 12 months, I imagine sales will ramp up even more than 2024.
Finally, the one down side to this influx of EV’s is the problem of charging. it has become a real problem and credit to the Hong Kong Government for doing it’s utmost to resolve this issue, with charging stations being built in malls, car parks and residential blocks but at the moment, one has to be very creative when it comes to charging, my friend who owns the Mercedes Benz EV has to charge the car at a Mall, leave it for a few hours and then pop back later in the day, not exactly convenient.
Apparently at the end of 2024 there were only 9,000 chargers available to charge EV’S and yet we have 110,000+ EV’s and that number is growing daily, I understand that charging your car is a real hassle and according to one report a charger in a shopping mall is double the price of using a charger you have installed in your apartment block parking garage - teething problems that will be solved now that sales are sky rocketing….
Hong Kong is only 430 sq km (1,113 sq miles) so that helps, we are a small city so there is always somewhere to charge your EV.
So there you go, that is the EV market in Hong Kong at the end of January 2025 and the 36 images below pretty much represent the popular models on the streets of Hong Kong.
