The day I shook hands with an alleged mob | triad boss at a very famous Temple on a private tour of Hong Kong and yes it is another day I will never forget.
I was a pioneer of Private Tours of Hong Kong, putting up my website in 2010 and doing my first tour in April of 2011, I completed 2,324 private tours of Hong Kong before Covid in January 2020 destroyed my business as Hong Kong was literally closed to tourists for 3 years.
I have some amazing memories of my time as a Private Tour Guide not least of which was the day I did a tour with a famous Princess on August 22nd 2012 and then this one when I shook hands with a famous alleged Hong Kong Gangster | Mob Boss | Triad Leader at an Iconic Temple in Hong Kong.
Not just any gangster I might add this is the famous | infamous “Shanghai Boy” all you need to do is type into Google “Shanghai Boy, Gangster, Hong Kong” and you will have a treasure trove of stories both old and current to read.
He was recently arrested again in Hong Kong, mid July 2024 to be more precise, lets just say he is as slippery as an eel when it comes to his freedom!
The Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple in Kowloon is one of my absolute favourite places to visit in Hong Kong, I always call it Hong Kong Culture 101 and it is far superior to the Man Mo Temple on Hong Kong Island favoured by many tour guides simply because it is easy to get to. (that is a story covered in other blog posts I have done.) I have been to the Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple around 1,500 + times over the years, iconic is not a big enough word for this place.
When you have done as many private tours of Hong Kong as I have you are bound to have what I call “moments” when amazing things happen simply because you where in the right place at the right time.
This was another such moment.
My guests for the day where a lovely Australian couple and we had made it over to the Temple on the subway after spending time at Victoria Peak on Hong Kong Island earlier.
I was taking a picture of one of my guests in front of a secondary temple when I noticed in the background a chap in a white suit surrounded by chaps dressed in black (his security detail) and I knew immediately that it was the infamous “Shanghai Boy” an alleged | reputed mob boss | gangster | triad leader, his image was a regular feature in the press.
His actual name is Kwok Wing-hung
The gentleman in the grey shirt next to him is an employee at the Temple who I knew quite well and he must have told the “Shanghai Boy” who I was because he smiled and made a beeline for us!
As I recalled to the wife later, it was a Tony Soprano moment!
He actually asked me in excellent English, “so you know who I am” ? yes, I replied “you are the Shanghai Boy”, which he found to be very amusing. handshakes all around and off he went with his entourage with lots of pointed fingers, whispers, averted eyes and bows from other members of the public.
At the time he was having major “legal and financial issues” so it was no surprise that he was at the Temple looking to the Gods for divine intervention and naturally proof that it is probably the most famous and best Temple in Hong Kong!
The bodyguards (four of them) where not just for show, there are plenty of people in his world that wish The Shanghai Boy harm and he had been attacked in public quite a few times and alleged gangsters being alleged gangsters in Hong Kong have no problem at all at causing harm and mayhem in public in broad daylight.
Lucky for me I always had my camera with me, proof indeed that my brief encounter with a another famous person actually took place!
Below is just a partial list of my private tour guests and their rather diverse occupations, I completed 2,324 Private Tours of Hong Kong in just 9 years with almost 60% of these private tours being 6 - 8 hours long and the ability to talk to so many wonderful people from all walks of life is a gift I acquired, I had over 6,000 guests, not bad for one person!
