Hong Kong Culture 101

Being English and from Yorkshire and of a certain age I have what is called a very well developed sense of humour, honed on Monty Python humour for the most part…

Living in Hong Kong for 52 years has not affected my humour in any shape or form and I have over the years taken quite a few images that are strange, odd, perplexing and just plain weird and I hope they will make you smile and perhaps give you a little insight into Hong Kong Culture.

**The Mime Girl**
Sometimes seen at the Ladies Market in Mong Kok in Kowloon , it is always a pity when jobsworth Government Inspectors move them on

**The young lady, the cow and a selfie to talk about**
It is not often you get to take a selfie with a friendly cow with horns but at the Big Buddha on Lantau Island in Hong Kong, they have a herd of cows who amble around, eat grass, poop and take selfies with tourists - my guests were thrilled! and naturally the Po Lin Monastery which looks after the place is full on vegetarian so the cows are quite safe.

**Salted Chicken**
According to my foodie friends who know about such things, these are the best salted chickens in Hong Kong, I am not sure the chickens would agree though.. seen at a Mong Kok Street Market in Kowloon

**The rather unique Dragon building**
75 - 77 Wellington Street in Central District - a very interesting and quite unique building with lots of Gold Dragons and such!! it is a Taoist Shrine and a local Welfare Organisation of some sort.

**Rude Girls.**
…. and this is not what you think.
I take my car photography very seriously and this is my spot at the Hong Kong Country Club on the South Side of Hong Kong Island, I stand on the road not on the footpath and I am constantly amazed at how people walk in front of me as I am taking images even though the footpath is behind me with plenty of space.
I missed out taking an image of a very fast moving super car because of these 2 lovely ladies who simply did not care one jot about good manners.

**The breakdown of society in Hong Kong**
I always feel so sad these days seeing young school kids glued to their mobile phones the second they leave school for the day, they no longer talk to each other, I guess it is the same everywhere

**Why is that crazy white guy taking our photograph?**
I was in an area of Hong Kong where my local hospital is and seeing someone like me is a rarity and I am always amused at how people react to my presence, mostly I am just ignored but I always find it odd how people seem to know that they are being photographed - these restaurant people did actually smile a few seconds later!

**Laundry day in a Squatter Village**
I live in a place where we have one of the few remaining squatter villages in Hong Kong, in a nutshell illegally built houses (sort of) on Government Land - it is quite common for people to hang their laundry on fences, next to signs that say “don’t hang your laundry on Government Land”… and I have absolutely nothing to say about the actual laundry.

**This goat has nothing in common with a blue parrot other than it is no longer with us**
A fairly common sight in our street markets and it can come as quite a shock to those with a weak disposition, just another day in paradise at Wanchai Street Market on Hong Kong Island

**Solonum Mammosum otherwise known as** nipple fruit, titty fruit or cows udder
Yes, this a plant which bears fruit and is very popular at Chinese New Year in Hong Kong, it is for decorative purposes only as the plant is apparently poisonous but the juice is not (figure that one out)
Although Solanum Mammosum is not edible the juice from its fruit offers several health benefits.
Juice if the fruit to treat sore eyes (this is exactly what is said, I cannot figure it out)
Treatment of scabies
Treatment of skin problems
Treatment of cracked nipples
Cure irritability and restlessness
The mind boggles.

**The Hairy Bikers, Hong Kong**
Yes, we have a lot of Harley Clubs in Hong Kong
… and yes, on Sunday, they rumble all over Hong Kong!! just awesome

**The Life Guards Club House, Repulse Bay**
Situated on the South Side of Hong Kong Island, this is the Lifeguards Club House and you can also buy soft drinks there! it is rather ornate to say the least and yes, these young people save quite a few lives every year.

**The Amazing Door Staff at the Peninsula Hotel, Hong Kong**
Very few people know this but most of the door attendants at this wonderful hotel are deaf mute employees (apparently this term is still quite acceptable) which in Hong Kong means job opportunities are very limited.
They are lovely people and credit to the Hotel Management for giving them such a worthwhile job.

**Hold that vomit**
Just a gentle reminder to try and hold it in before calling for Ralph and Huey!

**A bit early in the morning for that!**
You might be thinking that this is just another street | market scene at 9am in North Point on Hong Kong Island and you are right, it is that but the young lady in the black top is a lady of the night on the day shift and is propositioning the gentleman in the blue shirt, she was not fussy, in 10 minutes she asked about 15 chaps and none of them were impressed by her charms!

**My shadow has lost weight**
Ok, I admit it, I’m fat although in this day and age most people consider me as perfectly normal.
What is not normal is my shadow which currently puts me at 400lbs! I wear loose black shirts which accounts for the supposed mass, I am not even remotely close to 400lbs! and sometimes I have looked about 600lbs!

**The Bamboo Snake**
Yes, it is a viper and yes it is in a cage and yes, it looks like pure evil
They are not very big (up to 90cm for females) and with that colour, very hard to spot in the wild day or night and can be **quite lethal**, Hong Kong has 14 venomous snake species and this is one of the nastiest, unfortunately for the snake they taste good and are quite the delicacy in our snake restaurants.
Best seen when they are in a glass cabinet or metal cage and even then they make you shudder.

**Funny Street Sign**
Sai Kung in the NT, Hong Kong and home to some great street signs and yes, the Government is perfectly well aware that people snigger when they see the sign and take a photograph
