The idea of Hong Kong Free Tours is to connect you with the locals and visit our home with the local perspective. Our walking tours is about what we care as a Hong Konger, instead of herding you through attractions.”

I like Michael, is a very friendly and very serious young man who takes the tour business very seriously.. I have met him a couple of times and what struck me was his passion for the tour business.
Below is just some of the text from my original blog post about Michael and his Free Tours of Hong Kong with some additional comments.
I am completely fine with what Michael does these days because quite simply there are many people who visit Hong Kong who are not willing or able to pay for a private tour or even a group tour on a coach, Michael makes sure that no matter what your budget is he has you covered and that for me is very commendable and he absolutely deserves all the plaudits that come his way.
I first had contact with Michael in January 2017 and have met him a number of times over the years.
To be blunt, I was a little frustrated when Hong Kong Free Tours came on the scene, from day one since I have been in the tour business in Hong Kong (2010) I have been a fierce critic of the business model of companies offering free tours around the world based one one key point, the tour is not free.
As usual I digress
What I have learnt about Hong Kong Free Tours since 2017 is that their aim is to give (I would imagine mainly young Gen Z people) the opportunity to take a tour in Hong Kong which in general they would not do because of the cost of a private tour | food tour | group tour and such and it was always the intention from day 1 to do tours with themes that traditional tour companies (myself included) would not do, in effect Michael was not competing against the paid tour market he was simply offering everyone no matter what their budget an opportunity to learn about Hong Kong and that is noble thing to do.
Hong Kong Free Tours does paid tours and private paid tours and they have excellent offerings but their core business is still the free tours and Michael is to be commended for his efforts in promoting Hong Kong to the widest possible audience.
I should also point out that one of his very best tours is the one where the group visits what we call a sub divided flat in a relatively down trodden neighborhood and it gives the tour guests an opportunity to see how the very poor people live in Hong Kong and it is not a pretty sight (I should point out that my brother in law no. 2 lives in a sub divided flat and my brother in law no. 1 lives in public housing so I am pretty familiar with low cost housing in Hong Kong)
You also need to know the commitment made by Michael and his team, they actually RENT the subdivided flat for the sole purpose of showing their guests, they don’t just talk about it or show you an image, you actually visit the flat in an old building…. talk about experiencing the real Hong Kong!
The Hong Kong Government has pledged to eliminate sub divided units within the next 5 - 10 years, as I always say, good luck with that plan but you never know, it might actually happen.
Back to business
Hong Kong Free Tours has a huge selection of tours and over the years they have built up an excellent reputation and Michael deserves a medal for his plan to ensure that everyone that visits Hong Kong can take a tour, so quite simply - check out their website, check out their Tripadvisor Reviews and go on as many tours as you can fit in.
…. and on a more humorous note, my friends know I have a thing about large tour groups (15 | 20 | 30 participants) being led by a flag waving tour guide speaking through a microphone and constantly referring to charts and images in a binder, just the very thought of this makes me break out in a cold sweat! and yes, this describes your typical free tour! I have to keep telling myself that you have to adapt to the conditions, it is pretty hard to communicate with 30 people on a noisy street!, Michael at least ditched the flag in favour of bright yellow shirts that he and his guides wear!
Our Michael, a Hong Konger - a super friendly and dedicated Tour Guide and he does tours for people that would not under normal circumstances take a private tour primarily because of cost - he has put Free Tours on the map in Hong Kong in a big way, he is a real pioneer.
