“Greetings from Hong Kong!
Call me William, Bill or Big Bill whichever you prefer.
I am a semi-retired Asian American who has been an expatriate living in Hong Kong for 20+ years. My earlier career for three decades was as an international corporate lawyer with a prominent New York firm. Later in life, I changed direction and switched to other creative pursuits. I now style myself as a professional photographer, visual artist, self taught local historian and since 2015, a purveyor of premium private tours in and around Hong Kong. I have delivered over 1,500 private tours to date on behalf of various travel agencies. During the pandemic, I delivered over 500 livestreaming tours via Amazon Experiences and Tours By Locals.
This website, which is a constant work in progress, is aimed principally at describing the general nature of my activities as a freelance tour guide specializing in private tours of Hong Kong and it’s surrounding environs for solo travelers, couples, families and small and large groups including on occasion corporate outings.

In the image above Bill is on the right with the beard and the hat, the other chap in the image is Mike Rowse, who has been in Hong Kong as long as I have and worked for the Hong Kong Government in key positions in various departments.
Bill is the go to Hong Kong expert for quite a few radio programmes! when it comes to discussing tourism and such matters.
I did a blog post about Streets of Hong Kong Private Walking and Photography Tours in 2022 and a lot has happened since then so a blog post update was in order (which I did in March 2024) and now another update.
My fprivate irst contact with Bill was in 2015 when he sent me a message, we are both members of FLICKR a photography site and he mentioned he was interested in being a Private Tour Guide full time to compliment his work as a Professional Photographer
Intrigued, we set up a meeting and the rest as they say is history.
I am a pretty good judge of character and to me Bill was a natural private tour guide and I made it my mission in life to ensure he joined our ranks!
Bill is a long term Hong Kong resident having lived here for well over 20 years and one of his great attributes is his interest in what I call historical Hong Kong, he spends a great deal of time reading about the History of Hong Kong even pre - dating 1841 and naturally there are thousands of interesting stories just waiting to be told.
Bill is known for his meticulous research so you can be sure that all the tours he offers will be absolutely fascinating, Bill is a natural storyteller! and you should really ask him about his Hong Kong Spy Trail Tour, it is absolutely fascinating.
Whilst we have many similarities we are in a lot of areas complete opposites, whilst I have always had “a thing” about Hong Kong History I prefer to base my tours around my personal experiences of living in Hong Kong for 53 years since 1972! Bill was a high flying lawyer for decades, I was a low key business consultant in Hong Kong and we always laugh when I bring up the subject that we probably crossed paths in the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong in 1972, Bill was a frequent visitor to Hong Kong (his Dad had a business in Hong Kong).
I am a photographer, Bill is a master photographer - I know nothing about the intricacies on the technical side whilst Bill knows everything, I simply bought a very expensive camera that does all the work for me… we both have very distinctive styles and to be fair to me, I grew up here with a Hasselblad camera which was a film camera but I have no patience when it comes to the technical stuff, Bill eats that for breakfast!
If you have the chance you should really book Bill for one of his photography tours which is something I do not do, he has a gift when it comes to photography, I point and shoot! albeit with a very expensive camera and I am up to almost 174,000 Hong Kong images on my Flickr site. I simply lack the patience and knowledge to discuss photography, hence, book Bill!
Bill is little older than me (5 years) and American and it is our age and experience that sets us apart from most Hong Kong Private Tour Guides, I like to say we are old school and it is our attention to detail that makes us different.
One final point about Bill’s character, in January 2016 I had a severe medical emergency whilst doing 2 private tours in one day ( I had heart attacks with an S) and Bill was at the hospital shortly thereafter and we agreed that he would take over my private tours until I was back on my feet, (about one month later) it was I might add a seamless transition and Bill was amazing.
There is still life in us old geezers! it has been mentioned by our friends in the business that we bear a startling resemblance to the Muppet characters Statler and Waldorf!
Over the past year since my last post about Bill we have met a couple of times for many hours, Bill is a great sounding board, as mentioned we tend to disagree a lot on all manner of subjects but I must stress I absolutely value Bill’s advice and suggestions, he has saved me a few times from leaping without looking!
Bill is pretty prolific on Instagram and he also travels a lot around Asia with his lovely wife Esther, his posts are always interesting with him being a master photographer and all.
…… and to finish, do yourself a favour and book a tour with Bill, one of his specialties is spending 3 or 4 days with his guests, you will have a fabulous time in Hong Kong, Bill is the consummate professional.
