The Peak: ideal place to enjoy bird's-eye view of the city's iconic skyline and woodland trail

Victoria Peak, known simply as The Peak, is a must-see Hong Kong destination — both day and night — offering iconic views of skyscraper-flanked Victoria Harbour, Kowloon peninsula and craggy mountain peaks. Instagram buffs often visit at twilight to capture stunning images of the city's illuminated skyline, or photograph the area's rich flora and fauna and historic buildings while taking a relaxing hike along the tree-lined Peak Circle Walk. The Peak — a short trip from the central business district — is easy to reach by bus or taxi.

The statement above is courtesy of the Hong Kong Tourism Board and they have just about nailed it and they actually make a statement that it is an Instagram worthy spot.

… and yes, this image is one of my favourite ones that I have taken!

I cannot believe it has taken me so long to make a statement on my blog about the best and most epic selfie spot in Hong Kong, this is despite my writing so many blog posts about Victoria Peak and posting hundreds of images from my vast collection.

For some reason lots of people post about the best 30+ instagram selfie spots in Hong Kong and I imagine at some stage I will also write a post but it will be the best 50 spots or 100 spots!

First up, click on the link above for my how to get to guide for the epic selfie spot at the Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak and yes it is on the Peak Circular Walk.

The instructions are very detailed with images and if you follow them you will get there without a problem, amazingly many people who walk along Lugard Road stop at the wrong place and miss out on the most spectacular panoramic city view in the world.

Please also note that I have 4 How to get to Guides on my J3 Menu link on this site, all related to Victoria Peak., the 2nd best selfie spot in Hong Kong is a different view from Barker Road at Victoria Peak.

A little background - I have been along Lugard Road at Victoria Peak over 6,000 times since 1972, it is my favourite place to visit and I have watched the city change, evolve and expand for over 50 years.

Now a few words about the tragedy that is millions of people missing out on this epic selfie spot because of bad advice and | or laziness.. anywhere from 7 - 12 million people a year go to Victoria Peak and only a miniscule fraction go to the right place for the view!

At Victoria Peak there are 4 places to get the view so to speak

  • The Peak Tower 428 Sky Terrace Observation Deck

  • The Lions Pavilion about 1 minutes walk from the Peak Tower

  • The Peak Galleria roof Observation Deck about 1 minutes walk from the Peak Tower

  • The Lugard Road Lookout or Jamies spot at the Peak, about a 20 minute walk from the Peak Tower

It makes me so sad that the overwhelming majority of visitors to Hong Kong end up at the Peak Tower Observation Deck or 428 Sky Terrace (its official name) and pay a high price for what is a very limited view. Do not get me wrong, it is a nice view but is not anywhere near as good as the view from the Lugard Road Lookout, from the Peak Tower, you only get about half the view (despite their promotional blurb that you get a 360 degree view which is nonsense) at best you get a 90 degree view whereas the view from Lugard Road is basically a 180 degree view and much more substantial and it gives you a much better understanding of the size and scope of Hong Kong.

The views from the Lions Pavilion and the Peak Galleria are basically the same as the Peak Tower but FREE OF CHARGE.

Let me make something very clear, I do not have millions of people reading my blog posts (I wish!), at best maybe 100 - 200 visits only, all I post on Instagram is my car images in Hong Kong, no one was the slightest bit interested in my images of Hong Kong but they sure like my cars!

Therefore I am under no illusions about thousands of people daily suddenly wanting to walk to the Lugard Road Lookout but I will say that you will miss out on the most epic selfie shot in Hong Kong if you don’t walk there!

ps on my how to get to the Lugard Road Lookout viewpoint be sure to click on the link to go to the Hong Kong Observatory weather cams so you can check the weather at the Peak, if it is fogged in there is no point going!

Finally, on the menu for this site is the link Victoria Peak HK - these are links to all the specific blog posts I have written about Victoria Peak in Hong Kong, you may find them interesting.
