Another 18 Strange | Weird Hong Kong Images

Hong Kong Culture 101

Being English and from Yorkshire and of a certain age I have what is called a very well developed sense of humour, honed on Monty Python humour for the most part…

Living in Hong Kong for 52 years has not affected my humour in any shape or form and I have over the years taken quite a few images that are strange, odd, perplexing and just plain weird and I hope they will make you smile and perhaps give you a little insight into Hong Kong Culture.

The images are as usual in a totally random order and yes, this is volume 5, for volume 1,2,3 and 4 click on the buttons below

All images taken by me unless I state otherwise

The Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple, Wong Tai Sin, Kowloon Hong Kong

I am always amazed that many mediocre tour companies and guides cannot be bothered (the correct term I might add) to take their guests here, it is absolutely amazing and a proper introduction to Hong Kong Culture - instead they take people to the Man Mo Temple in Sheung Wan on Hong Kong Island which is about 10% of the size of this Temple complex, simply because it is easy to get to…

Chicken Feet

I have lived here for 52 years and let me be clear, I hate chicken feet, I simply cannot comprehend why they are seen as an amazing delicacy here and other places around the World. Simply a personal opinion of course!

SKY 100 viewing platform on the 100th floor of ICC, Hong Kong’s tallest building in Kowloon

I have been twice and never again, it is not exactly in a convenient location but that is a minor issue, It is also horribly overpriced but worse, the windows are so thick that they distort any image you might want to take as reflections are a huge problem, the view is amazing however and it is a shame that they did not have the nouse to make half the floor open air like the Empire State Building. The best thing about SKY 100 is the sign!

The Golden Carp

Every now and then you can see it at the Po Lin Monastery next to the Big Buddha on Hong Kong Island, the gold scales are almost metallic and naturally touching it will bring you eternal wealth, luck and happiness and yes I did.

Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb Museum in Hong Kong dating back 1,800 years apparently

Located in Cheung Sha Wan in Kowloon, it is an amazing cultural oddity, not easy to get to and it takes time but if you are here for a few days you might want to consider a visit, naturally it is behind glass walls.

The rhesus macaque Monkey at Monkey Hill in Hong Kong

For the life of me I cannot understand how people think that these buggers are cute, there are a few places in Hong Kong where I have had a run in with them and both times I dreamt I had a M134 Mini gun American 7.62×51mm NATO six-barrel rotary machine gun. They can be very large and hyper aggressive if you approach them and they can hiss, bite and scratch and give you all sorts of life threatening infections if they bite you. I was with my friend Amy in her car to take this picture, I know what they are capable of doing to a human.

I much prefer snakes and large spiders

Antony Gormley’s immobile men invade Asian skyline, Statue Square Hong Kong, 2015

One of the more interesting art collections ever put on display in Hong Kong, this was in the heart of the Central Business District caused quite a stir, the prudes and old biddies had a field day and you would be amazed at how many people grabbed the statue’s todger for an interesting photo op

Well Trained Security Guards giving me the once over

I cannot remember an armoured van ever getting held up (I could be wrong of course) but these chaps where good at the job, some security guards are allowed to have a shotgun (guns are illegal in Hong Kong for the general public with very stiff penalties)

The Big Buddha on Lantau Island in Hong Kong

Still one of my favourite places to visit and my guests always loved it… except the steps of course, all 268 of them which are challenging going up or down but it is well worth the effort.

The day I shook hands with an alleged Triad boss on a Tour | Private Tour Number 1,951 of 2,324 on 8th November 2017

I have some amazing memories of my time as a Private Tour Guide not least of which was the day I did a tour with a famous Princess on August 22nd 2012 and then this one when I shook hands with a famous alleged Hong Kong Gangster | Mob Boss | Triad Leader at an Iconic Temple in Hong Kong, yes, the Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple in Kowloon.

He is the chap in the white suit. if you click on the link below the image you can read my blog post about the experience.

Not just any gangster I might add this is the famous | infamous “Shanghai Boy” all you need to do is type into Google “Shanghai Boy, Gangster, Hong Kong” and you will have a treasure trove of stories both old and current to read.

The Hong Kong Bomb Disposal Squad

Quite a rare sight to see this vehicle, every year we seem to have roughly 5 - 10 incidents where a WW2 bomb is uncovered on a building site or a bag of WW2 hand grenades are found in dense undergrowth. The guys and girls that deal with them are made of sturdy stuff!

Weird adverts you see in the MTR Stations (the Subway)

A cultural thing I might add but my humour being what it is I crack up when I see adverts like this, to me this advert seems to suggest that this young man likes to sniff Kotex Sanitary napkins made out of a super absorbent material, the mind boggles...

Artist Richard Wilson teeters vintage coach replica off the roof at the Peninsula Hotel, Hong Kong 2015

Over the years the Iconic Peninsula Hotel has put on some great art shows in the lobby and outside of the main entrance, this was one of my favourites, a bus on the roof and it had hydraulic jacks to make it move up and down, it caused quite a stir

I love the rich families in Hong Kong, they do love their status symbols

A gorgeous Rolls Royce and a classic original Maybach, these 2 families know how to travel in style.

World leaders playing Mahjong

Advertising at a dodgy mahjong club on Temple Street in Jordan in Kowloon, you cannot miss it at night because of the super bright neon lights and yes they update it when World leaders leave office

The unhappy and short life of an eel in Hong Kong

I always liked to visit so called wet markets where most Hong Konger’s (particularly older people) like to shop for fresh food sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. It is also not a place for people with tender sensibilities particularly when it comes to dispatching creatures from the sea. In this instance when someone wants an eel the vendor takes one from the tank and slaps it has hard as he or she can on the concrete side walk!  yuk!

The day I shook hands with the Damned in a Hong Kong Hotel | March 1st 2017, the Hotel Icon, Kowloon in Hong Kong

The day I shook hands with the band members of the Damned in a Hong Kong Hotel and yes it is another day I will never forget and NO I did not take them on a tour!

if you click on the link below the image you can read my blog post about the experience.

Old Hong Kong as I remember it

Our family arrived in Hong Kong in early January 1972, this was taken by one of my guests a year before then, I love looking at these old photo’s - it brings back a lot of memories. This was taken from Victoria Peak and gosh how things have changed,
