“Private tours are about freedom and flexibility. The personalized itinerary and schedule match exactly what you want to get out of your vacation. You can easily add your go-to destinations, things to do, and types of activities that captivate your interests.

With private tours, there is no need for you to accommodate planned itineraries in advance. You can participate in the planning process as you want.”

The list above is just a sample of the occupations of my guests that booked a Private Tour of Hong Kong with me, quite a list! and the diversity made it a joy to do a tour with so many wonderful people.

I cannot think of one phrase that takes the question of “who books a private tour of Hong Kong” down to a basic type.

I was a pioneer the Private Tour Business in Hong Kong, setting up in 2010 and doing my first tour in April 2011, I was basically the first, at the time there was one company offering hiking tours and that is all and they did not offer Private Tours, the concept was new in Hong Kong but not in other cities around the world.

At the time in Hong Kong if you wanted to book a tour you would go to the lobby in your Hotel and there would be a travel desk where you could book a tour with essentially two companies, Gray Line Tours and Splendid Tours and their tours followed a template that has been around since the late 1960’s ie 20+ people from 5+ different hotels with an itinerary that included a stop at a jewellery factory for some forced shopping.

As far as I can tell no one was offering walking tours, city tours, cultural tours, free tours and such back in 2010 and those 2 coach tour companies mentioned also did shore excursions for Cruise Companies.

The options were very limited to say the least.

The basic idea I had was to offer tours to anyone that did NOT want to do coach tours or large group tours, i figured that although the cost to do a coach tour or group tour was competitive, you had no say on the itinerary and the groups were always 20+ people, with so called “professional” tour guides to shepherd you around.

I imagined that showing guests my Hong Kong was no different to showing friends or family around and my guests would much prefer to do a tour with no strangers and have a friendly English guide who has lived in Hong Kong for most of his life.

…. and that is how it all started and as they say, the rest is history.

Coach Tours, Group Tours and Free Tours are still available for people who do not mind that type of tour but the Private Tour Market is now deeply entrenched in Hong Kong and I am always so proud that myself and a group of like minded friends are at the forefront of the industry, I have been friends with the competition as it where for almost 15 years now as many of them set up in 2011 and 2012 and all of them are totally committed to offering the best possible private tour experience in Hong Kong.

  13. You will absolutely have a lot more fun! (p.s. and someone to take your picture!)

I do a lot of research and I have been on quite a few coach tours and free tours over the years in Hong Kong (for research purposes), the last of which I did about 6 months ago with a friend who is the owner of an amazing Private Tour Company in Hong Kong.

The tour we did was a hybrid walking | group | coach tour and I have to say I was appalled at how bad the tour was, everything about it was the total opposite of a quality private tour experience, put another way, had it been a great experience I would have had no hesitation in saying so and I would have no doubt learned things.. sadly this was not the case.

The company that offers this experience are ranked in the top 10 on Tripadvisor purely on the basis of so many people writing reviews, many of their tour offerings allow for up to 99 people in the tour group (seriously!) and they offer free tours and paid tours. I am astonished that they do not separate paying guests from guest not paying and if you are on their free tour you are told NOT to tell paying guests that you are doing the tour for free, in fact it is not free they insist on a payment in advance of HK$100 (US$12.80) and if you do not pay you are not allowed on the coach! oh and you only do half the tour itinerary.

For some reason the thing that irritates me the most is on their tour descriptions they mention that you do not have to pay to visit certain attractions which is odd because the attractions you go to do not have entrance fees!

Anyway, nuff said as they say.
