It is always about the people you meet in life

People I have met in Amazing Hong Kong

I have always been a people person and I put my charm to the test (!) by completing 2,324 private tours in Hong Kong between April 2011 to January 2020.

During this time I was fortunate to meet some very lovely people as guests but not just that, every day I meet all sorts of wonderful people in Hong Kong just going about their daily business and I have a large collection of images that I will share over the coming years.

The images are in no particular order and sometimes I have things to say and sometimes I let the picture do most the talking.

Every picture tells a story

My Friends | They are some of the best Private Tour Guides in Hong Kong

From left to right - Mandy, Amandine, Virginia, Nadia, Lorena and Amy

We have a very tight knit organisation of 14 Private Tour Guide Companies in Hong Kong and every now and then we get together.

Shades of Pink Floyd | Big Man, Pig Man

If you are a Pink Floyd fan like me, you will get the lyrics. There is nothing unusual here in Hong Kong about carting pigs (who are no longer of this world) around a market on a small trolley

RUN DMC | Chilling in Hong Kong with an entourage

Joseph Simmons RUN DMC and family at The Peak Tram, Hong Kong, just happened to bump into the good Reverend at the Peak Tram Station in Hong Kong, I chatted with him for a minute or two, he was very gracious in humouring me!

Mainland Chinese Tourist | totally oblivious to the red light when she crossed the road

I am one of the more well know car photographers in Hong Kong and I was very interested in the colour scheme of the Mercedes Benz, this young lady from Mainland China actually walked across the road on a red light despite the honking horns and moving traffic and straight into my shot!

Window Cleaner | 116 Floors up, ICC Building in Kowloon Hong Kong

Not an every day picture, I was hanging out in the Guest Lounge of the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Hong Kong which is on the 116th floor and I got this chap to pose for me, nerves of bloody steel but I do understand that they are very well paid

Keeping fit | … or eating ice cream?

I am generally very polite when it comes to photographing young ladies, I always ask, I just had to to take this shot, I was at Victoria Peak Hong Kong, outside the Peak Tower, when 3 young American tourists made a beeline to the ice cream store whilst the very fit young Hong Kong resident managed to resist the ice cream.

Hong Kong Hikers | They hunt in packs and are, like me, middle aged or older

You should not really get me started on Hong Kong Hikers, Hong Kong is green and 430 sq miles of rocks and 263 islands and a gazillion hiking trails and hiking has been fully embraced by the older generation over the years, apparently today the Hong Kong Government revealed that the greatest number of hikers were aged 55 - 65 and they are also the most likely to have accidents when hiking, even though most hiking trails are fairly gentle.

I always have to laugh as they gear up with branded equipment, clothes, backpacks and such to basically prove that they are serious hikers and they get sniffy if you do not have the right gear, some of them would not be out of place at the lower base camp of Mount Everest.

At least with this mob, no one was using walking poles in the urban areas, that really sets me off.

Guess who gets the girl | …. every time

One of those once in a lifetime moments - as my friends would testify I generally do not like cyclists because in my experience they have no respect for the rules of the road.

This was karma, the cyclist pulls up at the traffic lights outside of the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong and then Kawasaki Ninja rumbles up, they did exchange a quick glance… the Ninja easily tops 150mph and will burn off the fastest road cars from a standing start… no contest really!

Rude Girls | They might be lovely but they had no manners

This image is really not what you think, I am a car photographer and one of my spots is on the entry road to the Hong Kong Country Club on the South Side of Hong Kong Island, I do not stand on the side walk, I stand on the road and there is lots of room to walk behind me.

I get really miffed when people who can see quite clearly that I am taking photographs of cars for some dumb reason walk in front of me instead of behind, it makes no sense at all and I have had plenty of ruined shots as the cars I am photographing are travelling quickly and I get one chance for the picture.

Seriously ladies??!! a lot of young people today lack basic manners particularly when they are scrolling on their phones whilst walking.

Electric Bike fiends | I hate them passionately

I hate E Bikes passionately and guess what : they are illegal in Hong Kong, to ride one you have to have a full drivers licence and wear a helmet and yet we have thousands of food delivery guys all over Hong Kong causing chaos on the roads and ignoring all the laws.

It is only a matter of time before someone is killed.

Fortunately the Government is cracking down with 30 people arrested on May 13th 2024 for riding these death traps on the road without a helmet, licence or insurances.

The English Scooter Lady | I have been photographing her for years

I have been photographing this young lady for more than 10 years, she cuts a dashing figure on her scooter in the Central Business District.

She always reminds me of my Mum who along with my old man was a MOD back in the 1960’s and they were really into scooters.

The 3 Sisters | The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

I had a very pleasant and engaging 2 hour conversation with 3 Mormon Sisters - I have had many Mormon Guests from the USA and they were delightful.

I am always impressed when people have the confidence to talk to a stranger and I also realise that most people give Mormons short shrift which is really sad, they are lovely people and are not pushy

This encounter was in 2021 with Covid causing all sorts of issues and there was hardly anybody outside, I had the time, they had the time and we had an interesting conversation and they were quite surprised that I knew a lot about Mormons in Hong Kong and yes, I learnt a lot more.

Mr. and Mrs. Harley Davidson | so, so cool

Yes, this is my spot at the Hong Kong Country Club and on Sundays a lot of members turn up on their Harleys, I love motorbikes and this was a very cool shot.

The lone cyclist | and she still had time to give me a smile

Taken again, outside the Hong Kong Country Club as with Motorbikes Sunday is the day to see hordes of cyclists take over the road and unlike the food delivery guys, these cyclists follow the rules and wear a helmet.

The Rude Tourist | I can’t stand people like this

Every now and then I bump into rude people…. I was in Kwun Tong which is for want of a better place, an old industrial | factory district which is reinventing itself as a business district with lots of flashy new office blocks.

This chap who was clearly a tourist was also clearly lost, I waited 5 minutes before approaching him, he was on Google Maps and I asked him if he needed some help and without looking up he rather forcefully told me “NO” and went back to scrolling, I said enough that he must have known I was English but I could not figure out his nationality, I figured European because of his strange attire.

… and that was that.

Look at the height she gets | I have trouble getting my feet 6 inches of the ground!

Tourists at the Big Buddha on Lantau Island in Hong Kong

Famous Personal Alert | Gigi Chao at the Hong Kong Country Club in her Tesla

This is Gigi Chao - her Dad Cecil offered a substantial reward to any bloke who could marry her and produce children... Gigi and her female marriage partner Sean actually walked past me on the way to the Hong Kong Country Club and said hello and I got this image of them on the way out... yahoo a famous person!!

Her Dad Cecil who has been a staple of the gossip columns in Hong Kong for decades has a fabulous collections of Rolls Royce’s and Bentley’s all of which I have photographed.

Like the sighting of Big Foot | Government Goon Squad actually running

Street Hawkers are very heavily regulated in Hong Kong, licences are strictly controlled and for these FEHD (Food and Environmental Hygiene Department) officers people who try and flog stuff on the streets are to be hunted down no matter what the cost!

They do take their job very seriously and for some reason when you see them there is always 6 of them.

The truly stunning and amazing panoramic day view from the Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak

The truly stunning and amazing panoramic night view from the Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak

Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak

If I had any followers on Instagram who liked views rather than my car images then this would be a classic, Mum, Dad and 4 kids aged from 12 - 22 from England, perfect weather, the planets aligned as they do on most days at the Peak.

This rather sums up Jamie’s spot at the Peak.
