The iconic Sun Ki Bridge at the Tai O Fishing Village in Hong Kong

“Tai O fishing village on Lantau Island in Hong Kong — experience traditional Hong Kong culture | Visit the Sun Ki Bridge for a classic Tai O photo of stilt houses against rolling green hills, the Sun Ki bridge was completed in 1979 and financed by the residents of Tai O

This is a Tripadvisor review of said bridge by Brad who is a Hong Kong legend for his 180,000 contributions on Tripadvisor | Hong Kong, China

Small wooden bridge and viewpoint of the stilt houses

Jan 2021

One of the many interesting things to find in Tai O is the short Sun Ki Bridge which crosses the river and mud flats on the northeast side of the village, linking Kat Hing Street (west) and Sun Ki Street (east). There is a small information board providing glimpse of the history of the bridge.

It was built in 1979 and paid for by the local residents to create a more convenient way to cross the the river and flats here. Before the bridges construction, generations of villages had to punt their way across. What you find is a simple wooden bridge construction with fence guards on both sides. It is only around 25 metres long.

Interestingly, from the middle of the bridge, you will see some of the best views of the stilt houses of Tai O, lining the riverbank and flats. It is a good spot from which to take photographs.”

I have been to Tai O Fishing village many times in 53 years and I always love going there and the image above which I took is exactly as stated above, I stood in the middle of the Sun Ki bridge.

I will confess now, I did NOT use Instagram Filters for this image but I did some tweaking on Photoshop, not much but the image came out a lot more vibrant than it could ever be in real life, even with cloudless blue skies and a blazing sun, you will never get that vibrancy.

This should not stop you from going there, I have taken hundreds of images in and around that spot, which is about a 15 minute walk from the more famous bridge, the Tai Chung bridge, which pretty much every visitor to Tai O crosses

I have taken quite a few images like the above in less than sunny weather and it is still a great selfie image, a little drab but very interesting! do not be put off by lack of sunshine, your Instagram filters may well liven the image up, it really is quite a unique shot to take.

I always like to think that our merry band of the best Private Tour Guides in Hong Kong have put the Big Buddha and the Tai O Fishing Village on the map.

Most of us have been offering this specific Lantau Island tour since 2011 | 2012 long before the large group tour companies listed on Viator, Klook, Tripadvisor etc came on the scene. Many of these group tour organisations run tours to the Big Buddha and then to the Tai O Fishing village with up to 100 people on the tour and yes, the quality of these tours is very poor and not a very pleasant experience.

The NP 360 organisation jumped on the bandwagon quite a few years ago offering deals that combined travelling on the NP 360 Cable Car to the Big Buddha with a bus ride to the Tai O fishing village and a boat ride around the stilt houses and such, these boar rides, well, they do attract large groups of selfie driven young people!

I should point out that to get to this Selfie Spot at Sung Ki bridge, you actually have to walk there through the village, the tour boats have never gone there.

So that’s it, short and sweet and yes it is absolutely worth the time and effort to go there.
