Looking for the perfect night out at sea? Look no further – you can board the Aqualuna, a traditional wooden Chinese junk, for a night of gorgeous harbour views and cocktails!

Hong Kong at night - what to do?

The image above that I took of the Aqualuna is another one of my favourites, the planets aligned for sure.

I love the Aqualuna fishing junk, I have been on it many times since it first set sail in 2006 and gosh it makes for a glorious snapshot day or night as it sails around Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong with Hong Kong Island in the background.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board loves it as well, they like to stick groups of journalists and Tourism people from around the world on it ( a press junket it you will ) particularly at night time, it goes down a treat.

This is the official blurb on the HKTB Website

“Absorb Hong Kong’s history while enjoying the intoxicating harbour and skyline views on board aqualuna. This ultimate Hong Kong experience is only complete while indulging in ultra hip cocktails and snacks while lounging in aqualuna’s 1,500 square feet cabin and al fresco decks. Possibly the last Chinese junk to be painstakingly handcrafted in Hong Kong, aqualuna was created using age old designs and traditional materials by an 80 year old local craftsman. Also known as “Cheung Po Tsai” in Cantonese, aqualuna is named after the infamous Cheung Chau island pirate who used to terrorize these waters. Aqualuna regular sailings: 45-minutes sailings of Victoria Harbour are the ultimate Hong Kong experience. Visitors to aqualuna not only get to sail on a Chinese junk but you can discover some of Hong Hong’s best-kept secret places. Offering 1,500 square feet of indoor and al fresco space, split across two wooden decks, aqualuna’s full bar and cocktail lounge can accommodate up to 80 guests at a time for exclusive private cocktail cruises and dinners. aqualuna offers a superb setting in which to host corporate and/or private functions and parties.”

High praise indeed and the Aqualuna does live up to all the hype and they have 2 vessels as they have greatly expanded their offerings and they do private charters as well.

Oh and did I mention they also own the Hutong Restaurant amongst others and it is rather splendid and the restaurant is located in a very convenient location close to Victoria Harbour in TST, Kowloon.

Over the years I have heard and read many comments about the Aqualuna along the lines that it is a tourist trap, over priced, over rated, the boat is not original but a replica and such and yes the 2 boats are replica’s but made in the traditional way to traditional specifications and I have been in Hong Kong for so long I remember when Victoria Harbour was full of fishing junks.

I do not agree with the negative assessments at all, I think it is a rather splendid way to pass the time and have a meal and a few drinks whilst admiring the skyline of Hong Kong Island (but note they have many experiences | itineraries) and yes, there are other Harbour Cruises and I have been on all of them and none of them are anywhere near as good as the Aqualuna,

Do yourself a favour when in Hong Kong, book an Aqualuna cruise and experience a little piece of Hong Kong history and culture and yes, I prefer the night cruise to the day cruise……
