I am a leading expert in Hong Kong on the Car Vanity Plate Culture also known as Personalised Car Licence Plate Culture which garners worldwide attention particularly at Chinese New Year in Hong Kong and I have also taken over 104,000 + images of cars in Hong Kong, it is a thing!
Hong Konger’s love their cars and luxury cars in particular are highly prized and shown off, as well they should, it is a real pity that these days Hong Kong residents are trading in their awesome petrol cars for very bland and cheap Mainland Chinese EV’s basically batteries on wheels, the brands have no back story, no racing history, no culture and quite often are straight copies of Tesla and Toyota models (petrol driven), we now have over 100,000 ev’s on the road in Hong Kong which is for a car lover a real tragedy.
My thing for BMW cars started in 1972, when we arrived in Hong Kong, I noticed that the roads where filled with Mercedes Benz cars and to a lesser extent BMW cars it was quite something, it was also quite something to see expensive European car brands all over the place (not to many Japanese cars back then) I tried to persuade my old man to get a Mercedes Benz or a BMW but he was adamant that he wanted a Jaguar and that was that, we got the Jaguar.
I rather like BMW Cars, a brand that will always be linked with the Sporty Luxury Car Segment like Mercedes Benz who doesn’t! and I have to say if you are a fan you will NOT be disappointed in Hong Kong, BMW and Mercedes Benz still dominates the many categories of the Sporty Luxury car segment but it is nice to see all the major European brands in Hong Kong and big numbers as well, there are approximately 60,000+ BMW cars in Hong Kong which is a quite a staggering figure for a small city bettered only by Toyota and Mercedes Benz and yes as usual, ANY colour seems to be the most popular colour! there are some very creative colour schemes out there although I always think a BMW looks best in white or black although the metallic like gold option looks perfect on the M3
I have watched with dismay at the emergence of EV’s and BMW are at the forefront of bringing our and dominating the electric car market, honestly a lot of the new design BMW EV’s are just awful, they have lost something in my humble opinion, anyone who is a fan (ie me) of the BMW M series will know what I mean and for me one of the great joys of life is that engine rumble and cackle as an M3 or M5 (older model) goes by unfortunately most of them will disappear over the next 10 years or so.
The images are in no particular order and it was a seriously difficult and lengthy task to choose 28 images from my 12,000+ BMW images - Hong Konger’s worship BMW and I am very fond of them, I just wish that they will improve the styling of the EV models and as a ps - I have a thing for quite a few of the BMW SUV’s with petrol engines, they can be real beasts and are just awesome!
