Jamie, English and 52 years living in Hong Kong and I know the place. I personally completed 2,324 private tours in Hong Kong (6,000+ guests) from April 2011 - January 2020 and was considered one of the finest Private Tour Guides in Asia and I pioneered the Private Tour | Walking Tour | City Tour | Food Tour markets in Hong Kong, setting up in 2010.

I no longer do private walking tours because of some health issues meaning I cannot walk for long periods of time so doing 6 or 8 hour walking tours is not an option, however I do offer my premium Hong Kong Experiences.

I therefore recommend my friends to do your Hong Kong Tour.

I had a great run as they say but I also know when to quit!

Hong Kong unfortunately has many, many mediocre tour companies who hide behind the veneer of respectability by listing on Viator and Tripadvisor, on these platforms there are literally thousands of tour listings and you pretty much have no idea who the company is offering the tour but more importantly who the guide will be.

The total tour experience is totally dependant on the quality of the Guide

A word about English Fluency

One of the worst things about a lot of the mediocre tour companies in Hong Kong is that they say that their guides speak fluent English and you might assume a very high level of English on the level of a native English speaker - this is quite often not the case.

All my friends English (for those that are local Hong Kong Chinese) is top notch but I remind you that fluency in English here is not quite as good as you might expect as they say and many guides, well lets just say you will have a hard time connecting with them.

I understand perfectly well that a lot of visitors feel that they can only have an authentic Hong Kong Tour experience with a so called “local” in other words a Hong Kong Chinese person which to me is nonsense particularly given Hong Kong unique status as a former British Colony for 156 years, Hong Kong is an International City and anybody that has lived here for more than 10 years is more than qualified in my book and as the Government puts it - tell good Hong Kong stories.

I have lived here for 52 years and I doubt there is any “local” tour guide in Hong Kong who has that depth of knowledge that I have, I also believe that the best tour guides are aged 35+, for some insane reason the Hong Kong Tourist Authorities believe that anyone over 18 can be a great tour guide!! These are just my personal opinions.
