The lack of rain shelters + seats at Victoria Peak Hong Kong

An oversight that should be corrected immediately!

It has been known for it to rain at Victoria Peak!

Seats and Shelters | Victoria Peak | Hong Kong

I am always amazed of the inconsistencies in the various Government Departments in Hong Kong, they do so many things right and deserve a lot of credit but you know what, sometimes they overlook some pretty obvious issues that could easily be fixed and frankly should be a priority.

Those of us that go walking at Victoria Peak would kill for simple seats or benches and shelters on Lugard Road and Harlech Road.

The Lugard Road Lookout (or Jamie’s spot at the Peak) is an exceedingly popular spot with residents and visitors alike where you get the most iconic and amazing panoramic view of Hong Kong, it is breath taking.

In a nutshell, to get to the Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak you have to do a 15 to 20 minute walk along the very green and beautiful Lugard Road, a somewhat iconic colonial road built over 100 years ago. Now, it rains in Hong Kong, particularly in the summer months May to September, (not to mention the heat and humidity) it is not monsoon like and it does not rain everyday, we can go weeks without rain, sometimes there are thunderstorms that go along with the rain... we all know that being under trees during a thunderstorm is not good for your health.... and it would be lovely to sit down every now and then and rest.

The one and only seat available (no shelters) from the Peak Tower to the Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak!

Amazingly there isn't a single place to shelter from the elements anywhere along Lugard Road up to the Lugard Road Lookout, seriously! in fact if you do the full Lugard Road | Harlech Road loop which is about 2 miles, there is but a single shelter about half way along the route and for those that want to rest, there is a single ancient concrete bench as shown in the image above.

This is the Golden Orb spider which is very common at Victoria Peak in the summer months, it can give you a nip if you get too close but the shock factor is it’s size and if you look at the image of the concrete bench above, well those trees are a very popular spot for these spiders, which is why a shelter | bench should be built as shown in the image below

I have lost count of the number of times I have been caught out without an umbrella when it suddenly starts to rain

Amazingly if you walk down Hatton Road which runs off Lugard Road further along from the Lugard Road Lookout they do have the seating shelters as shown in the image going all the way down to Kotewall Road.

In a nutshell the Hatton Road part of Victoria Peak is a designated Country Park and run by a different Government Authority and they have the common sense to put in these shelters., it is nonsensical because there are so few people who walk down Hatton Road when compared to the many thousands of people who do the Lugard Road | Harlech Road loop on a daily basis.

There are plenty of seats and shelters on Hatton Road walking down from Victoria Peak

I have taken this up with the District Council many times over the years - they “look after” Victoria Peak, so far they have not bothered to reply. Money is not the issue as Hong Kong is one of the richest “countries” in the World, this is just stupid petty Government bureaucracy with the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, to me it makes no sense given how well they do on most simple infrastructure projects and this should be a priority given the number of tourists and residents that walk along Lugard Road on a daily basis.

There is more than enough space to build these shelters every 100 yards or so along Lugard Road and as you can see the design is quite basic (ergo cheap) and they blend in with the surroundings.

Amazingly the imbeciles that won't build shelters for humans, have on Lugard Road built Dog Latrines for our canine friends, it beggars belief as dogs simply ignore the poo pits.. it just shows the idiocy of those people in charge at the Peak District Office.

Welcome to my world.

The truly stunning and amazing panoramic day view from the Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak

The truly stunning and amazing panoramic night view from the Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak

Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak

If I had any followers on Instagram who liked views rather than my car images then this would be a classic, Mum, Dad and 4 kids aged from 12 - 22 from England, perfect weather, the planets aligned as they do on most days at the Peak.

This rather sums up Jamie’s spot at the Peak.
