The Best Cool and Must See Places to Visit in Hong Kong
Jamie’s Guests on a Private Tour of Hong Kong - Volume 5
What can I say (well I have said it so many times!) Hong Kong is my home…. I have lived in Hong Kong for 52 years, since 1972 when Hong Kong really was considered the Pearl of the Orient and I really do like this old slogan, as far as I am concerned no other city comes close to matching Hong Kong.
With social media and easy access to the web there is probably a million articles about Hong Kong and I have written extensively on the subject of “hidden gems and secret spots” in Hong Kong, those tired old travel and tourism cliches. I get a tad irritated that search engines have deemed these phrases as essential to search results with the result that every Tour Company in Hong Kong uses them to get noticed.
Trust me there are simply no hidden gems and secret spots in Hong Kong in this social media age, everyone has been there, done that and posted the images and video’s on Instagram and I have never understood this obsession with going to a “hidden gem” 1 hour there and 1 hour back to take a photo or two that takes 5 minutes just to post on Instagram or other forms of social media.
Based on my experience of doing tours (2,324 in 9 years) and being a bit of a photographer (170,000+ images) I find the best image scenario’s pop up so to speak when you least expect them and they can be at the most visited tourist sites in Hong Kong! but as they say, “what do I know!”
… and yes images on Instagram in particular are heavily edited with 20 different filters giving them a dream like quality which bears no resemblance to reality and you will see 2 million versions of the same image and smart phone camera’s are still nowhere near the quality of a proper camera.
To make Hong Kong come alive and to really immerse yourself into Hong Kong culture you need to book a Private Tour of Hong Kong with one of my friends or what I call the Hong Kong Experience with Jamie, there is simply no substitute for seeing Hong Kong with a top notch private tour guide, story telling is a gift and they have it or you can choose to spend a few hours with me!
IMPORTANT - Please remember that the quality of any TOUR you book is 100% dependent on the guide you choose so do your research and please choose wisely!
As I have mentioned more than a few times watching You Tube video’s and downloading travel apps will not give you a better experience, you will probably have a limited amount of time in Hong Kong and the biggest mistake that visitors make when coming to Hong Kong is assuming that their smart phone with Google apps and transport apps will solve their transportation issues, they do not, you need a long term resident who does private tours for a living to maximise your time and yes, bring Hong Kong alive by putting everything into context.
On these images of my guests below I mention the location the image was taken.
….. oh and one final point, looking at images is one thing, actually seeing it with your own eyes and listening to the explanation of what you are seeing cannot be beat! please visit Hong Kong - Pearl of the Orient
