Hong Kong Culture 101

… and yes, Motorbikes have vanity plates as well and so far I have not seen any interesting ones and they only appear on the back of the bike making them hard to photograph.

Hong Kong Transport - Motorbikes | Motorcycles, All Brands

There are approximately 75,000 - 82,000 (ish) Licenced | Registered motorcycles, scooters and tricycles in Hong Kong and dealers keep large stocks of popular models for immediate delivery due to heavy demand

The Transport Department classifies motorcycles and scooters as the same type of vehicle, personally I prefer the term motorbikes rather than motorcycles .....and yes, Hong Konger‛s love fast bikes.

There is nothing at all unusual about the popularity of motorcycles in Hong Kong, big powerful bikes are a lot more popular than the entry level 125cc and 250cc bikes simply because here you can get a motorcycle from all the major brands that do 190mph + and 0 - 60mph in 2.8 seconds, fast enough to outperform most supercars and even hypercars in Hong Kong and at a fraction of the price of a typical supercar, it is an easy sale.

As an example - here a Kawasaki Ninja H2R 2021 model does 0 - 60mph in 2.5 seconds and hits 222mph! and is just 15% of the cost of a Lamborghini, Ferrari and other popular supercars in Hong Kong.

Unfortunately personal safety leaves a lot to be desired here, helmets are required but it is very common to see young and often inexperienced people riding a superbike wearing a pair of shorts, a t-shirt and a pair of flip flops and regrettably this lackadaisical approach to safety means every year we have awful accident statistics relating to motorcycles.

2022 Hong Kong Road Accident Statistics relating to Motorbikes | Motorcycles.

•2,669 road traffic accidents involving motorcycles

•92% of these accidents resulted in injury to the rider and any passenger

•280 accidents resulted in serious injuries to the rider and any passenger

•9 deaths recorded

Please note that as of June 6th 2024 the 2023 statistics are still NOT available

I personally witnessed 2 horrific accidents involving motorcycles in 2020 and I prefer not to talk about them but what I will say is that even if they had been wearing proper safety clothing (leathers, boots etc) the outcome would have been the same and most accidents are a bike hitting or being hit by a car, truck or bus - just a cautionary note to those people who are considering buying a motorcycle or scooter for that matter.

There are over 125 brands of motorcycles and scooters for sale in Hong Kong - In the motorcycle sector the most popular brands in terms of numbers sold are :

•Honda ✚ approx. 22,000

•Yamaha ✚ approx. 16,600

•Suzuki ✚ approx. 6,400

•Kawasaki ✚ approx. 5,000

•Ducati ✚ approx. 1,350

•Harley Davidson ✚ approx. 1,200

•BMW ✚ approx. 750

These numbers are approximate

Please note that as of June 6th 2024 the 2023 statistics are still NOT available

All the numerous biker clubs are out in force on Sunday‛s when weather permits! It is not unusual to see 50+ big bikes in formation on country roads on Hong Kong Island, you have to love these guys and gals...

Ducati is a very popular brand in Hong Kong

Not something you see every day but sitting in the sidecar sure looks like fun

Probably my favourite image of a motorbike, taken outside of the Peninsula Hotel in TST, Kowloon and it is very, very rare to see a ride wearing full protective gear

Everyday clothing is normal, at least by law they have to wear a helmet

Take a wild guess as to who gets the girl! sometimes images just fall into place

Yes, we have a whole bunch of Harley Clubs - awesome guys!

… and who doesn’t like a lovely young lady on a monster bike!

A classic Norton

Motorbike clubs are everywhere and out every Sunday if it is not raining

Yet another Ducati

.. and another and how is that safe for the young lady riding pillion? it is just crazy on a powerful bike like that

Holy Moly, a Hello Kitty Bike, hopefully someone will actually ride it on the streets

Your average Hong Kong biker just going about his business.

Just slightly safer for the Pillion rider when compared to a Ducati

… and yes, the sun was shining as it was raining, the bikers curse - wet weather

The Hong Kong Police Force do not skimp on bikes, they buy the best - thIs is the VIP Protection Unit, they ride in packs

… and our Traffic Cops are very well trained, I always get eyeballed, always

Awesome bike and awesome riders, they save lot’s of lives
