It is always about the people you meet in life

People I have photographed in Amazing Hong Kong

I have always been a people person and I put my charm to the test (!) by completing 2,324 private tours in Hong Kong between April 2011 to January 2020.

During this time I was fortunate to meet some very lovely people as guests but not just that, every day I meet all sorts of wonderful people in Hong Kong just going about their daily business on the Streets of Hong Kong and I have a large collection of images that I will share over the coming years.

The images are in no particular order and sometimes I have a lot of things to say and sometimes I let the picture do most the talking.

Please note my car images tend to be a lot better than my people images, I never seem to get the right light or right setting for the people shots! I should stress that I am not in anyway a professional photographer, I know the basics and have a great camera, in any event great images are so subjective! my one concession to quality is that I will almost never take a picture using my smart phone, the image quality is just not there

Every picture tells a story

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | it is not very often you see a guy on a motorbike with the proper safety gear

I think location is very important when it comes to taking what I call my action shots, I do like to get up close and personal and I do a lot of research … one of my favourite spots is in the middle of Salisbury Road at the junction of Nathan Road in TST, Kowloon, a great traffic island with the opportunity to photograph from 3 different directions, perfectly safe and it is yards away from the Iconic Peninsula Hotel.

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | A tennis coach at the Hong Kong Country Club, gosh.

Another one of my favourite spots is the main entrance to the Hong Kong Country Club on the South Side of Hong Kong Island, 2 way traffic and a nice pavement to stand on.. this is where I go on Sundays when all the fancy cars are out in force and amazingly it gets very crowded and it is a particular hotspot for joggers and cyclists

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | The art of making shrimp paste at the Tai O Fishing Village in Hong Kong

One of the few places you can see this “dying art” of preparing shrimp paste, an iconic Hong Kong delicacy, personally I find the stuff toxic, more suited to paint stripping than making your food taste better but that’s just me, people swear by it.

It is a long way to the Tai O Fishing Village from Hong Kong Island and then a boat ride to the Tai O Heritage Hotel (which is well worth a visit) and then a long walk back to the town centre and you will find all sorts of cultural oddities along the way including this cottage industry.

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | A dying art in Hong Kong due to over zealous red tape

Street performers are a dying out in Hong Kong and it is so sad, Mong Kok in Kowloon near the Fa Yuen Street and the Ladies Market used to be a vibrant place and well worth a visit and the Government did it’s part by closing of sections of roads to allow all sorts of noisy street performers do their thing. … and gradually since 2019 the Government re opened the roads and banned many activities so the area is now a shadow of it’s former self.

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | My niece Jennifer, she has impeccable taste in cars

Not her car although I suspect her boyfriend would love to have one! I do love the colour scheme on this Lamborghini

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | The look of sheer weariness, the Mong Kok wet market.

I imagine this chap has been a fishmonger for 50+ years, a wet market is not the place for people with weak stomachs but it is Hong Kong Culture 101 and I love walking around them, you can really feel the Hong Kong vibe.

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | with a bike like that I am guessing he does not have a girlfriend or wife!

How on earth is this considered remotely safe? he will not survive getting hit by any vehicle never mind a 38 tonne container truck

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | A street cleaner, salt of the earth in Hong Kong

Ignored by everyone and yet this army of elderly and underpaid workers keep the streets clean, they deserve a lot more than they get paid.

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | Airport Security, you would not mess with these boys and girls

I imagine our Airport Counter Terrorism Police are trained by the very best and yes, he knew I had taken a photograph of him!

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | I do like to get up close and personal

Helmets aside, not many people wear proper safety clothing, in Hong Kong there are far too many fatalities involving people on motorbikes and scooters.

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | my friend, the Vespa lady on Garden Road

I have been photographing this young lady for many years, she is English and I had a quick chat with her recently whilst she was waiting at traffic lights on Chater Road in Central.

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | .. and yes, I get that look a lot

I spend a lot of time in Tsuen Wan, a large town near to where we live and it is a great place to explore… this is a fairly typical local Dim Sum Restaurant and yes, that look of bemusement says it all, they do not see many foreigners so to speak in this neck of the woods.

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | oh my and is that a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes?

This is my Garden Road spot where I do a lot of car photography and during the day there is a steady stream of people going to all the large commercial buildings nearby as well as lost tourists looking for the Peak Tram Station, it can be very diverting and distracting.

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | You have to love these guys… Hong Kong hairy bikers on Harleys

We have plenty of Harley Clubs in Hong Kong, you can hear the darn things a mile away and Sunday is hog heaven - love it

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | 2 minutes after I took this the Police told her to get dressed and leave!

I took this down at Central Piers in the business district, I actually thought for a moment she was going to go topless but some locals so to speak had stopped a couple of Police Officers who asked her to get dressed and leave presumably telling her to stick to the beach. We have an offence here called “outraging public decency” and images like this are social media fodder

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | one of the famous “villain hitters” in Causeway Bay (local folklore)

Have a read of the article on the link below

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | These guys are just amazing, we have loads of them

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | FEHD Inspectors on the prowl

Street Hawkers are very heavily regulated in Hong Kong, licences are strictly controlled and for these FEHD (Food and Environmental Hygiene Department) officers people who try and flog stuff on the streets are to be hunted down no matter what the cost!

They do take their job very seriously and for some reason when you see them there is always 6 of them, the other 3 of this group were just out of sight hassling people. The only thing missing from their belt is a gun

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | out on the sunny Sunday run

Out by the Hong Kong Country Club and off to the Beach.. it is a thing

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | The dark side, prostitution at the Temple Street Night Market

A single lady offering services so to speak is legal, organised prostitution is not and this scene is played out 24 hours a day, it is what it is

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | Laura the owner and Alex a master guide, Hello Hong Kong Tours

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | a young child keeping an eye on the stall in a wet market

A scene played out everywhere in Hong Kong, the disadvantaged do what they have to do to survive and raise a family

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | I hang out in Statue Square a lot, it is great to just watch the world go by

I love Statue Square in the heart of the Central Business District, so much history and so peaceful and great for people watching, I am a frequent visitor now for over 50 years, what you see now has not changed much since the modern version opened in 1962

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | I am never 100% sure if these canisters are full or empty!

I often wonder what would happen if this “vehicle carrying dangerous goods” was hit by a bus doing 50mph? the transport of these flammable goods is very heavily regulated and they use special trucks and I think these are just empties been collected but you cannot tell? and it must be hard to keep your balance.

People on the Streets of Hong Kong |  A lovely smile from a food courier delivery person

Delivering food by scooter maybe a thing of the past in a year a two as the Hong Kong Government is going ahead full steam on its “low altitude economy” plan, which means, deliveries by drones!

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | You do not really see street entertainer any more, such a shame

See my comments above on another similar image in the same location - this guy was in his 70’s when this image was taken and quite a hit with locals and tourists alike

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | yet another rubbish collector

People on the Streets of Hong Kong | This is Bill, one of the great private tour guides in Hong Kong

The truly stunning and amazing panoramic day view from the Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak

The truly stunning and amazing panoramic night view from the Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak

Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak

If I had any followers on Instagram who liked views rather than my car images then this would be a classic, Mum, Dad and 4 kids aged from 12 - 22 from England, perfect weather, the planets aligned as they do on most days at the Peak.

This rather sums up Jamie’s spot at the Peak.
